Leading WHO’s work on clinical trials that are sustained, inclusive, equitable and efficient.

My vision is to enable patient-centric ethical research aligned with WHO’s mission and vision. The priorities are to convene the clinical research community with related stakeholders such as, most importantly patient and community stakeholders, regulators, ethics authorities and funders, amplify excellent work by the leading ethically grounded stakeholders globally and identify gaps in the clinical research environment, infrastructure and capabilities. Once we have agreement on the gaps my priority is to help external stakeholders best placed to address these gaps to generate high quality ethical research that meets these gaps in an efficient, timely manner. My emphasis is on supporting local leadership so that those with the best understanding of issues on the ground lead the work.

Key drivers for my work: health outcomes, impact, relevance to local needs, international collaboration where mutually beneficial, bringing leaders together to be greater than the sum of their individual organizations, ensuring patient and community voices are placed centrally in research decision-making where they belong, addressing the needs of under-represented populations.

I believe that through application of innovative designs, fit-for-purpose proportionate approaches, by embedding ethical research into clinical care, by embracing the benefits of the AI singularity, we can transform healthcare and the lives of people around the world leaving no one behind. To do this priority research questions for population and patient needs should take front and centre, and research should be enabled at all levels of the health system and at all income levels around the world. Interventions should be affordable, implementable and available for populations most in need.
